Company history at a glance

Initially known as Kalahari Resources (Pty) Ltd, Kalagadi Manganese (Pty) Ltd was established in 2001 by several black South African women entrepreneurs, with Mrs Daphne Mashile-Nkosi at the lead. The women have since built a successful company and continue to pursue investments in the mining and other sectors of the economy.

In 2005, Kalahari Resources applied and was granted a new order mining right to prospect for manganese in the Kalahari Basin, Northern Cape. The right covers three farms spanning a total of 6300 hectares located eight kilometres South West of Hotazel, a town in the Northern Cape’s John Taolo Gaetsewe District Municipality.

In January 2007, Kalahari Resources sold a 20% stake to the Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa Limited (IDC) and this resulted in the establishment of Kalagadi Manganese (Pty) Limited. The following year, ArcelorMittal purchased a 50% interest in the company but has since sold its stake.

Kalagadi Manganese has successfully established and operates a mine which boasts the largest sinter plant in the world. The company plans to construct a smelter operation at the Coega Industrial Development Zone in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality in the Eastern Cape.
